HVAC Blower Motor Resistor Kit

The HVAC blower motor resistor controls the speed of your vehicle's cabin blower motor by varying electrical resistance to the motor. It enables multiple fan speed settings—low, medium, and high—through a resistor circuit that steps down voltage at each setting.

When this resistor fails, the blower motor often works only on the highest speed setting (which bypasses the resistor), or stops working on certain speeds. Some failures result in no blower operation at all, eliminating both heating and A/C airflow inside the cabin.

The blower motor resistor and the blower motor itself commonly wear together. If the resistor failed due to motor overload, inspect the blower motor for wear or obstructions before installing a new resistor to prevent a repeat failure.

Kit versions include both the resistor module and wiring pigtail connector—useful when the connector has melted from heat buildup, which is a very common failure mode on this component.

What are the signs of a bad HVAC blower motor resistor?

The most common symptom is fan speed working only on the highest setting while lower speeds stop functioning. You may also experience the blower not working at all, or only on one specific speed setting.

Is it safe to drive with a bad blower motor resistor?

Generally safe, but without proper airflow you lose defrost capability, which creates visibility and safety issues in cold or humid weather. In hot climates, loss of A/C airflow is also a significant safety concern.

Can I replace just the resistor or do I need the full kit?

If the wiring connector shows heat damage or melted terminals, replacing the full kit—resistor and pigtail together—is strongly recommended. Installing a new resistor into a damaged connector often leads to repeat failure.
