Track Bar

The suspension track bar, also called a Panhard rod, is a lateral link that connects the solid rear axle to the vehicle's frame, controlling side-to-side axle position while allowing up-and-down suspension travel. It is a critical alignment component on trucks, SUVs, and vehicles with solid rear axle configurations.

A worn track bar causes the rear axle to shift laterally under load or during cornering, producing a wandering sensation, pulling to one side, a clunking noise over bumps, and uneven rear tire wear. These symptoms worsen significantly as the end bushings and ball joints wear further.

Track bars work closely with trailing arms and control arm bushings in the suspension system. When the track bar has failed, inspect adjacent trailing arm bushings and alignment components—worn bushings throughout the rear suspension compound handling problems and accelerate tire wear together.

After installing a replacement track bar, a four-wheel alignment is required to restore proper rear axle centering and correct any steering pull that developed while the worn bar was in service.

What are the symptoms of a bad track bar?

Symptoms include rear-end wander or drifting during straight-line driving, pulling to one side, a clunking noise over rough road surfaces, and uneven rear tire wear indicating the axle is no longer centered properly under the vehicle.
