Ride Height Sensor

The suspension ride height sensor is a position sensor linked to the vehicle's suspension that measures the distance between the chassis and the axle or wheel assembly. On vehicles with adaptive or air suspension, this data allows the control module to adjust suspension stiffness, vehicle height, and automatic headlight leveling based on load and road conditions.

A failing ride height sensor triggers warning lights, causes incorrect headlight aim, prevents the suspension from adjusting to the correct ride height, and can put the adaptive suspension system into a fault mode that locks it at a fixed height.

Ride height sensors are directly connected to the suspension linkage and are exposed to road debris, moisture, and temperature extremes. Inspect the mounting arm and linkage rod for bending or corrosion when replacing the sensor—mechanical damage causes incorrect readings even with a new sensor installed.

Replacement sensors must be calibrated to the vehicle after installation on most platforms. Verify whether a dealer scan tool or compatible aftermarket tool is required to complete the calibration procedure.
